South Dakota CSH Building Healthy Schools Project
Coordinated School Health in the SD Departments of Education and Health selected two regional Education Service Agencies (ESA) to implement the Building Healthy Schools Project. The goal of the project is to develop district level capacity to increase the number of schools that implement effective policies, programs and practices related to physical activity and healthy eating, tobacco use, and HIV prevention.
A school health project coordinator at each ESA works in partnership with CSH Staff to implement two key strategies:
Facilitate the implementation of Coordinated School Health councils in pilot school districts within the ESA region. District teams attended orientation training, completed the School Health Index, and developed an action plan which included identifying School Level Impact Measures to be addressed. Each district receives $15,000 over a three year period and is required to send a five member team to training each of the three years. ESA Coordinators provide technical assistance to district teams.
Administer a regional based training plan to reach all schools within the ESA region. In order to provide more cost effective training events, regional training opportunities are offered to all of the schools within the ESA region. Training provided is based on the CDC priority areas, School Level Impact Measures, and training needs within the region.
