North Dakota Moving to Improve Learning for Everyone

The ND Coordinated School Health team has collaborated with the North Dakota Moving to Improve Learning for Everyone (NDMILE) team. The NDMILE is an on-line system that includes indicators of evidenced-based practices at the district, school and classroom levels to improve student learning. The NDMILE has 168 indicators that have been researched by The Center on Innovation and Improvement (CII). CII has done the research so that educators can spend their time using the indicators in their planning and teaching. Over the past several years, the tool has been researched in Virginia districts, schools and classrooms. The research demonstrates that using this tool produced gains in both reading and mathematics in 26 out of 27 schools.

The majority of indicators focus on planning, curriculum, instruction and assessment. However, the NDMILE also has some indicators that contain school health topics, including healthy food choices; physical activity; wellness; partnerships with businesses and community organizations; food services; characteristics of a safe, caring, and respectful school community; on-going professional development that addresses health topics; and a comprehensive plan. The NDMILE can be used to fulfill the reporting requirements for the Title I School Program Improvement Plan, the Title I Schoolwide Plan, Portions of the Professional Development Plan, and the School Improvement Plan. Currently there are 38 North Dakota schools using the tool. It is hoped that eventually all North Dakota schools will be using this online tool.
