Michigan CSH SINS in Michigan
SINS is a collaborative two year project between the Michigan Departments of Health and Education, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, and four school districts in Michigan.
The goal is to improve the nutritional quality of food and beverages offered and sold on school campuses in an effort to lower childhood obesity rates and improve the health of Michigan students, staff and communities.
Grant Process
In October 2010, a final version of the Michigan Nutrition Standards (Standards) was presented to and adopted by the State Board of Education.·
Three of the demonstration districts implemented the Standards campus wide (a la carte lines, concessions, fundraising, school meals, school stores, vending machines, etc.) starting with the 2010-11 school year. The fourth district implemented the Standards in the cafeteria only (a la carte and school meals). Middle schools in these districts also implemented Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) during the 2010-11 school year.
·
Extensive support in the form of technical assistance, trainings, resources, tools and a full-time Project Consultant was provided to districts.·
In May 2010, training for district level Coordinated School Health Councils began on implementing and promoting the Standards. Districts then provided training to students, staff, parents and community members on the Standards and the importance of a healthy school environment.
