The Best Day Yet – World AIDS Day 2010

On December 1, 2010 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in partnership with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), Walgreens, and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) hosted close to 1,500 seventh through 12th grade students for a World AIDS Day 2010 Youth Summit. The event aimedto educate students on the HIV and AIDS epidemic and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and arm them with the facts to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS and other STIs. The CPS youth summit is a platform to educate students on the realities HIV/AIDS and other STIs through a series of expert teaching sessions, informative skits and personal testimonials. In addition, the After School Matters acting ensemble performed a captivating vignette entitled “What Would You Do?”, following a performance by a local rap duo. Experts and advocates together used this summit as an open forum to discuss the epidemic with students through a question and answer panel discussion.

In addition to the teen summit, CPS partners with Walgreens and TrueStar Magazine annually to engage students in the HIV/AIDS discussion through the Expressions Against HIV/AIDS Awareness Art & Literacy Contest. The Expressions winners were announced prior to the conclusion of the summit. Expressions is an annual initiative focused on motivating teens 13 to 18 to creatively express their views on HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
